At the end of a clear lesson, the moment when students transition into practice can quickly shift the energy of the room. In this coaching reflection, we'll explore a simple move that strengthens that transition: pausing briefly and inviting students to name their purpose before they begin working.
When students take a few seconds to think about what they are trying to improve or apply, their work begins with direction. Instead of simply starting the task, they begin with intention. That small pause helps students focus their effort, rehearse their thinking, and take greater ownership of their learning.
In this video, I walk through what this moment can look like in real classrooms and share a few practical ways teachers can support it, including focus sentences, brief resets, and mid-practice check-ins. Each move takes less than a minute and helps keep learning centered on purpose rather than task completion.
This video offers a thoughtful reminder that sometimes the most powerful teaching move is simply creating the space for students to aim their effort before they begin.
